 Course Description

Anthology of American Literature is a compulsory course for the students of the major of English. This course concentrates on the major literary trends and the major writers of American literature from the early colonial period through the 20th century. Generally speaking, American Literature consists of two branches or two courses: The History of American Literature and Selected Readings in American Literature. Of the two courses, Selected Readings is more important than the History. If the students only study the History without reading any original works, what they can get is only an empty frame or a skeleton without flesh and blood. So it is very necessary for the students to read some original works in American literature. The students can be greatly benefited by what they read, because these classical works do not only tell them some interesting stories or many beautiful expressions, but also enable them to understand the world, understand human life and human nature. Their mind will be enriched; their insight will be more profound. Besides, their level of English language will be greatly raised because literary works are the best materials for language learning.

Targets of the Course

Through the study of the selected readings from the representative works of some famous writers, the students are supposed to obtain some basic and important knowledge and information about these works and their writers.

*       Comprehension (basic requirement)

*       Appreciation (second level )

*       Evaluation  (highest level )
